From Wednesday, 16 May to Friday, 18 May, a group of PhD students and faculty members from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the Goethe Universität Frankfurt and the Berlin Graduate School for Transnational Studies came together for a joint PhD workshop. The discussions at the three-day workshop were based on the event’s title: “Contestations of the Liberal Script”. The workshop was organised by the BTS in cooperation with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
The first day started with an introductory session led by two PhD students of the BTS, Cedric Koch and Oleksandra Kryshtapovych. First, participants discussed in four small teams the different notions and the limitations of the liberal script on a personal, regional and global scale. Later they addressed the various types of contestations of the liberal scripts that are emerging in present-day societies. At the end of the day, Prof. Tanja Börzel hosted a reception where she could welcome the guests.
The second day started with a brief speech by Prof. Michael Zürn, followed by the paper proposals of the doctoral students. The vivid and constructive debates took up separate research interests introduced by the PhD students and placed them in a context within the contestations of the liberal script.
On Friday, after the last presentation of papers, Prof. Tanja Börzel and Prof. Michael Zürn rounded off the final workshop day with interesting insights into the Proposal for a Cluster of Excellence “Contestations of the Liberal Script (SCRIPTS)”.
In retrospective, it has been a successful and engaging workshop and we want to thank all participants and sponsors for their valuable contributions.
