Call for Papers

The Kolleg-Forschergruppe “Transformative Power of Europe” organizes an International Conference on “The Diffusion of Regional Integration”, Berlin, December 9-11, 2010

The conference will have three major themes around which the panels will be organized:
1. Comparing Regional Integration: Divergence or Convergence
2. Exporting Regional Integration: The European Union as Promoter of Regional Integration
3. Importing Regional Integration: Adoption, Translation, Resistance

For this academic conference, we invite papers from various disciplinary perspectives to each of these themes. Papers should explicitly address the diffusion of regional integration as outcome or process. Please find more detailed information on the three themes on our website:www.transformeurope.eu.

Please send your paper proposal with a one-page abstract by August 30, 2010, to transform-europe@fu-berlin.de.

Invited paper givers will be notified in early September. The Kolleg-Forschergruppe will take care of their travel costs as well as accommodation in Berlin during the conference.

New PhD-candidates will start their research at BTS

We warmly welcome our new BTS cohort: The 2010 BTS candidates will start working on their dissertation projects in the beginning of September. Before getting started with their research projects and moving into their offices, the new PhD candidates will be introduced to the three partner institutions.

A formal welcome and inauguration ceremony of the new BTS cohort will take place on 12 October 2010 in the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin. After last year’s success, a Poster Presentation of all PhD projects from the first and second cohorts will follow. The reception following the presentation will offer the possibility to further discuss research projects and to meet other BTS cohorts, faculty and BTS friends

Stephen Krasner meets PhD fellows

Before presenting his current work at the jour fixe of the Sonderforschungsbereich 700, Stephen Krasner took the time to meet with PhD fellows from the BTS. Krasner commented extensively on each student’s PhD project and was impressed by the variety of topics covered. The meeting concluded with a discussion on the role of academics in policy making, where Krasner reflected on his role as Director of Policy Planning at the US State Department.

Election of the Executive Committee

In February 2010, the members of the BTS Executive Committee were confirmed in office. In the general meeting of the BTS, its core faculty and student Representatives Alejandro Esguerra and Holly Oberle elected the affirmed Executive Committee. The committee consists of one representative of each participating institution:

• Michael Zürn for the Social Science Research Center Berlin (WZB)
• Markus Jachtenfuchs for the Hertie School of Governance (HSoG)
• Thomas Risse for the Freie Universität Berlin (FUB)
