4. Dissertation Topic
Dissertation Title: "Developing the European Public Sphere: European Narratives Through Citizens' Mobilization". (Working title).
Short Description: The aim of the current research project is to investigate if a selected issue has the potential to be developed into a pan-European narrative contributing to the framing of a supranational European identity. More specifically, the dissertation will explore whether we can observe the emergence of a pan-European narrative on the issue of development aid. A total of twenty empirical indicators have been selected in order to test the degree to which the four fundamental features of a narrative (historic-contextual resonance, the existence of a community of communication, socio-political mobilization potential and long-term sustainability) are present for the issue of development aid in Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy and Spain. The results for each of the five member states of the European Union will then be compared and contrasted to understand whether we are witnessing the emergence of a shared pan-European narrative on the issue of development aid.
