Start of the Programme
At the beginning of the academic year, we organise information days for all incoming PhD candidates. During this event, we introduce the BTS institutions (FUB, HSoG, and WZB), organise guided library tours, and have fun get-togethers in the evenings. There will be plenty of time to socialise and learn more about the programme.
We also arrange mentors from further along in the programme for all incoming candidates. They will be present at the information days and available via email prior to the programme to answer any of your queries about being a PhD candidate at BTS.
The Dahlem Research School also offers an Orientation Week at the start of the term. In the mornings, language classes are offered for beginners in German, while a varied programme of lectures on intercultural communication, German academic culture, and excursions takes place during the afternoons.

Health Care
In Germany, every student studying at a state-recognised institution of higher education is legally required to have health insurance. The statutory health insurance requirement is valid until the age of 30 or until completion of the 14th full semester of study.
As an international student under 30, you must acquire German health insurance unless you hold a European Health Insurance Card, which students from EU/EEA countries can obtain in their home countries. Please note that the European Health Insurance Card covers medical emergencies; however, it does not provide for regular consultations. Therefore, we recommend that all candidates register for German health insurance.
To register for German health insurance you have two different options: either state or private.
To register for state health insurance you must have been covered by a state health insurance policy in your country of origin for at least 12 months. This has to be proven to the German state health insurance board. A modality has to be clarified in the specific case and with the specific statutory health insurance.
A comprehensive guide to health insurance for international students in Germany in 10 languages can be found here. A comparison of benefits and a survey of private health insurances in Germany can be found here. (Only available in German)
For further information on the German health insurance system in English please see this page. Some further information is also available on the homepage of the Hertie School of Governance.
