Information for Applicants
The programme starts on 1 September.
Admission is open to graduates of master’s programmes (or equivalent) in the social sciences, political science, international relations, sociology, economics, law, or related disciplines.
Each year, the call for applications is open from 1 December to 31 January. Applications for our PhD programme must be submitted online. All required documents must be submitted online by the 31 January deadline. Late submission of documents is not permitted.
Please, do not send us or faculty members any documents asking for review or for supervision.
Applicants from China are required to submit their application on the online application system and via the Bejing Office of Freie Universität Berlin by 4 January 2019.

- Certificates and transcripts of your bachelor’s and master’s degree qualifying you for PhD studies in political science, international relations, sociology, economics, law, or related disciplines
- Proof of C1-level English language skills or the equivalent (see specification here)
- An up-to-date CV
- A short letter of motivation (600 words maximum)
- A research proposal (5,000 words maximum) with a timetable for your project
- Two letters of reference from professors at universities or research institutions
All documents must be submitted in English, except master’s degree diplomas and reference letters, which may be submitted in German. Uploading is possible in JPEG, PDF, DOC, or RTF formats with a maximum size of 2 MB per file and 20 MB total. It is not necessary to send original copies of documents prior to being accepted. If you are accepted, you will be required to provide certified copies/translations of your documents in paper form before enrolment. Enrolment at BTS will not be possible without these documents.
We strongly recommend that you focus on the requested documents (university degree, proof of English language skills, CV, letter of motivation, research proposal, and two reference letters). However, you may include other documents to support your application, e.g. documents demonstrating practical skills, such as internship certificates.
